Feedback mechanisms between water availability and water use in a semi-arid river basin: A spatially explicit multi-agent simulation approach

چکیده
Understanding the processes responsible for the distribution of water availability over space and time is of great importance to spatial planning in a semi-arid river basin. In this study the usefulness of a multiagent simulation (MAS) approach for representing these processes is discussed. A MAS model has been developed to represent local water use of farmers that both respond to and modify the spatial and temporal distribution of water resources in a river basin. The MAS approach is tested for the Jaguaribe basin in semi-arid Northeast Brazil. Model validity and required data for representing system dynamics are discussed. For the Jaguaribe basin both positive and negative correlations between water availability and water use have been encountered. It was found that increasing wet season water use in times of drought amplify water stress in the following dry season. It is concluded that with our approach it is possible to validly represent spatial-temporal variability of water availability that is influenced by water use and vice versa. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Investigating Pareto Front Extreme Policies Using Semi-distributed Simulation Model for Great Karun River Basin
This study aims to investigate the different management policies of multi-reservoir systems and their impact on the demand supply and hydropower generation in Great Karun River basin. For this purpose, the semi-distributed simulation-optimization model of the Great Karun River basin is developed. Also, the multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm is applied to optimize the develop...
متن کاملImplications of complexity and uncertainty for integrated modelling and impact assessment in river basins
The paper focuses on implications of uncertainty in climate change impact assessment at the river basin and regional scales. The study was performed using the process-based ecohydrological spatially distributed model SWIM (Soil and Water Integrated Model). The model integrates hydrological processes, vegetation/crop growth, erosion and nutrient dynamics in river basins. It was developed from th...
متن کاملDRIVING OPTIMUM TRADE-OFF BETWEEN THE BENEFITS AND COSTS OF INTERBASIN WATER TRANSFER PROJECTS
The interbasin water transfer is a remedy to mitigate the negative issues of water shortage in arid and semi-arid regions. In a water transfer project the receiving basin always benefits while, the sending basin may suffer. In this study, the project of interbasin water transfer from Dez water resources system in south-west of Iran to the central part of the contrary is investigated during...
متن کاملLinking Bayesian and agent-based models to simulate complex social-ecological systems in semi-arid regions
Interdependencies of ecologic, hydrologic, and social systems challenge traditional approaches to natural resource management in semi-arid regions. As a complex social-ecological system, water demands in the Sonoran Desert from agricultural and urban users often conflicts with water needs for its ecologically-significant riparian corridors. To explore this system, we developed an agent-based mo...
متن کاملImpact of climate change on streamflow in the arid Shiyang River Basin of northwest China
Climate change may significantly affect the hydrological cycle and water resource management, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. In this paper, output from the Providing Regional Climates for Impacts Studies (PRECIS) regional climate model were used in conjunction with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to analyse the effects of climate change on streamflow of the Xiying and Zamu ...
